Metal – insulator – metal (MIM) waveguides can support surface plasmon resonances at visible wavelengths. They have been widely investigated for applications in image reproduction, photonic integrated circuits, solar cells, metasurfaces, and metalenses. In this notebook we will use Tidy3D to simulate a MIM-based color filter. The original design was proposed in Xu, T., Wu, YK., Luo, X. et al. "Plasmonic nanoresonators for high-resolution colour filtering and spectral imaging," Nat. Commun. 1, 59 (2010) DOI: 10.1038/ncomms1058.

If you are new to the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, we highly recommend going through our FDTD101 tutorials. FDTD simulations can diverge due to various reasons. The MIM nanoresonator simulation is defined within the next function. Here, we show how to set up the MIM structure, define a plane wave source, include a flux monitor to calculate transmittance, and lastly, create a field monitor to record the field distributions at the resonance wavelengths. R, G, and B Color Filter Simulation¶
Now, we will create a batch object to submit and run all the MIM simulations at once in our servers.

Let's look at the simulation setup and verify if everything is in the correct place. We are using symmetry about the x and y axes to reduce the computation time.

Now, we can run all the simulations in parallel using run_async. This function submits a set of Simulation objects to the server, starts running, monitors progress, downloads, and loads results as a BatchData object.

Simulation Results¶
After running the simulation, we download the results from the server.

And now, we can plot the R, G, B color filter transmittance spectra calculated from the flux monitor. The small differences between the peak transmittance values obtained here and the ones in Figure 1(c) of the reference paper are potentially caused by differences in material properties.
